Route Overview & Local Insights

Tackle this stunning 11.6km loop that showcases the absolute best of Inverclyde’s rugged beauty. Starting from either the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre or Papermill Road, you’ll find yourself on a mix of well-maintained gravel tracks and traditional grassy footpaths. While the 113m of ascent classifies this as a hilly route, the elevation is manageable and rewards runners with breathtaking panoramic views across the Firth of Clyde, the Cowal Peninsula, and the distant peaks of the Southern Highlands. The terrain is entirely off-pavement, making it a perfect choice for trail runners looking for a consistent, scenic surface that feels truly wild without being overly technical.

The centerpiece of this run is "The Cut," a remarkable feat of 19th-century engineering. Completed in 1827 to provide water power to the mills of Greenock, this 9km aqueduct is now a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument. As you run alongside the historic water channel encircling Dunrod Hill, you are following in the footsteps of the "Water Men" who once patrolled these paths to manage the flow. The area is part of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, and on a clear day, the contrast between the industrial heritage of the Clyde and the natural grandeur of the Scottish mountains provides an inspiring backdrop for any training run.
