Starting from Quarry Road, this 10.6km circuit offers a quintessential Highland trail running experience through the dense Morangie Forest. With an ascent of 200m, runners can expect a moderate challenge as the route climbs steady forest tracks and undulating woodland paths. The terrain is a mix of approximately 25% paved surfaces and significant stretches of rugged forest floor, making it ideal for those looking to transition from road running to trail. As you navigate the loop, you will be rewarded with the serene atmosphere of The Green Loch Circuit, where the pine-scented air and occasional sightings of local wildlife provide a refreshing escape from the daily grind.
Tain holds the proud title of being the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, and the "Hill of Tain" has long been a focal point for the local community. The Morangie Forest which blankets the hill is perhaps most famous for providing the mineral-rich water source for the nearby Glenmorangie Distillery. As you run, you are traversing the very landscape that defines the region’s heritage. Keep an eye out for the prominent Tain Tower on the skyline and enjoy the panoramic views across the Dornoch Firth; on a clear day, the vista over the Sutherland hills is arguably one of the best rewards for any runner in the Easter Ross area.
