This 7.7km loop offers a quintessential West Highland running experience, blending road and trail through the lush landscapes surrounding Strontian. With 100m of ascent, the route is gently undulating rather than punishingly steep, making it an excellent choice for a steady aerobic session. You’ll experience a varied mix of surfaces, with about 60% paved roads complemented by the soft, atmospheric woodland paths of Phemie's Walk. As you loop around Allt nan Cailleach and Scotstown, prepare for stunning views of the Sunart hills and the soothing sounds of the Strontian River as you follow the water back toward the finish.
Strontian is a village steeped in scientific and industrial history, famously giving its name to the element Strontium, which was first discovered in the lead mines nearby in the 18th century. As you run past the banks of Alt Na Meinne (the 'stream of the mine'), you are traversing ground that once drove the local economy during the Enlightenment. The Ariundle Oakwood National Nature Reserve nearby is a remnant of the ancient Atlantic oakwoods that once covered much of Europe's western seaboard; running here feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by rare lichens, mosses, and the potential sight of a golden eagle soaring above the ridgelines.
