The Ring of Steall is a formidable 16.5km skyrunning classic nestled within the Mamores range, demanding serious mountain experience and a head for heights. With a staggering 1750m of vertical gain, this route takes runners over four Munros—An Gearanach, Stob Coire a' Chàirn, Am Bodach, and Sgùrr a' Mhaim. Expect technical terrain ranging from the adrenaline-inducing scramble across the "Devil’s Ridge" to punishing scree descents that will test even the strongest quads. The wet Highland weather can transform the rocky arêtes into slippery challenges, so sure-footedness and precise navigation are essential as you traverse these high-altitude spines above the clouds.
Located in the heart of the Highlands near Fort William, the "Outdoor Capital of the UK," this area is steeped in mountaineering history. The route begins near the iconic Steall Falls, famous for its appearance in the Harry Potter films and as one of Scotland's most dramatic cascades. While the views of neighboring Ben Nevis are spectacular, the Mamores offer a more rugged, alpine feel that has made the Ring of Steall a bucket-list circuit for fell runners and skyrunners worldwide. Running here connects you to the ancient metamorphic roots of the Scottish peaks, providing a raw and visceral experience of the elements away from the busier tourist tracks.
