Starting at the iconic John o' Groats signpost, this 8.3km loop offers an invigorating mix of coastal drama and smooth road running. With 129m of ascent, the route is moderately hilly, but the 100% paved surface makes it accessible for road shoes while providing a firm footing as you tackle the inclines. Runners will experience the raw beauty of the Caithness coastline, passing Duncansby Head lighthouse before turning inland for a fast, flat return stretch. The highlight for any runner here is the sight of the Duncansby Stacks—massive sea pinnacles that dominate the horizon as you reach the most northeasterly point of the British mainland.
Local runners know that while Cape Wrath may be further north, Duncansby Head is the true "edge of the world" feel for the Highlands. John o' Groats has long been the starting point for legendary endurance feats, from "End-to-End" cycling records to ultra-marathons. As you navigate the coastal path, keep an eye out for puffins nesting in the cliffs during spring and summer, and be prepared for the famous Caithness wind—it can turn a steady 8km run into a serious strength session. This area is steeped in Viking history, and the rugged, treeless landscape offers a unique sense of isolation and freedom that is hard to find anywhere else in Scotland.
