This 4.8km loop from Fortrose is a runner’s dream, offering a predominantly flat and fast circuit that hugs the stunning Moray Firth coastline. Setting off from Wester Greengates, you’ll enjoy a mix of paved surfaces and sea breezes as you navigate Ness Road toward the iconic Chanonry Point. With a negligible ascent of just 10 meters, this is an ideal route for tempo sessions or a recovery jog where the focus is entirely on the view rather than the incline. The path provides wide-open vistas across the water, making it a refreshing escape for locals and visitors alike.
Beyond the pavement, Chanonry Point is world-renowned as one of the best land-based spots in the UK to witness the resident colony of Bottlenose dolphins. As you round the Ness Road East section, keep an eye on the "Kessock" currents; the dolphins often feed here on the rising tide. The area is steeped in Highland history, sitting just a stone's throw from the 13th-century ruins of Fortrose Cathedral. Running here feels like stepping into a blend of maritime heritage and natural wonder, especially during the golden hour when the lighthouse at the point begins to sweep across the firth.
