Conquering Ben Nevis is the ultimate tick-list item for any mountain runner visiting Claggan. This 15.6km out-and-back journey starts from the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre and climbs relentlessly via the Mountain Path (often called the Pony Track). With over 1,300 meters of vertical gain and a maximum difficulty rating for hills, runners should expect a mix of well-maintained rocky steps at the base transitioning into loose scree and rugged plateau terrain near the summit. The ascent is a test of pure aerobic capacity, while the descent demands technical footwork and quad strength as you navigate the zig-zags back down to the Glen Nevis valley.
Steeped in Scottish history and Gaelic lore, Ben Nevis—or "The Ben"—was once an active volcano that collapsed inward millions of years ago, creating the dramatic granite cliffs of the North Face. As you run, you’re following in the footsteps of the legendary Ben Nevis Race, which has seen mountain runners fly up and down these slopes since 1895. Local runners recommend an early start to beat the hiker traffic and suggest carrying a waterproof shell even on sunny days, as the summit is notoriously shrouded in mist and can be significantly colder than the trailhead at sea level.
Adjust your pace for the massive 1,324m climb to the summit.
The 15.6km distance is manageable, but the ascent requires serious prep.
Protect your knees and ankles on the technical descent from the peak.
Calculate the fuel needed for a high-intensity mountain effort.
