Experience the raw beauty of the Scottish Highlands on this 6.5km loop around Balnakeil Bay in Durness. This route offers a quintessential coastal running experience, blending approximately 30% paved surfaces with rugged natural terrain. Runners will transition from steady road sections to the soft sands of Balnakeil Beach before tackling the undulating grassy cliff tops on the eastern edge of the bay. With a manageable 75m of ascent and a "Hilly 2" rating, it provides just enough elevation to get the heart rate up while rewarding you with panoramic views of the North Atlantic and the white sands of the Kyle of Durness.
Located at the very edge of the British mainland, Durness is a land steeped in Norse history and dramatic geology. As you pass the Durness War Memorial and skirt the bay, you are running through a landscape that famously inspired John Lennon during his childhood holidays. The area is renowned for its unique machair—fertile coastal grassland—and the nearby Smoo Cave, a massive limestone sea cave. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; it is not uncommon to spot seals in the bay or golden eagles soaring above the cliffs, making this short loop feel like a true wilderness adventure.
