This 7.0km loop offers a fantastic blend of suburban Dingwall streets and the lush, elevated woodlands of Coill an Righe. Starting from Blackwell Street, runners are treated to a steady initial climb that rewards the effort with beautiful vistas over the Cromarty Firth. The terrain is varied, with about 25% of the route on paved surfaces before transitioning into well-maintained forest tracks that define much of the 170m ascent. Classified as a "hilly" category 3 route, it provides enough of a gradient to challenge your lungs and build strength without being overwhelming, eventually leading into a refreshing descent through the canopy back to the town level.
Dingwall, historically the Viking 'Thing-völlr' or parliament field, serves as the perfect gateway to the Highlands and carries a rich heritage reflected in its rugged landscape. As you navigate the Coill an Righe (King's Wood) section, you are running through a patch of forest traditionally associated with royal hunting grounds and local timber production. This route is a favorite among Ross County runners for its accessibility and the way it quickly escapes the bustle of the High Street into the tranquility of the Highland foothills. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; it is not uncommon to spot deer or red kites as you traverse the higher ridgelines overlooking the town.
