Tackling the heights of Cnoc Mòr offers Highland runners a fantastic 14.2km loop that perfectly balances a challenging ascent with rewarding views. Starting from the village of Contin, you will encounter a significant climb as you head toward the summit of Cnoc Mòr, gaining approximately 257m in elevation. The terrain is predominantly solid underfoot, making it an excellent choice for those wanting to build hill strength without navigating technical mountain singletrack. Once you peak, the route transforms into a rhythmic, mostly downhill stretch that sweeps past the serene waters of Loch Kinellan, providing a scenic and fast-paced descent back to the starting point.
The area surrounding Contin and Strathpeffer is steeped in Highland history and natural beauty. For generations, these paths have served as vital links between the rugged glens and the fertile lowlands. Loch Kinellan, a focal point of your return leg, is famous for its crannog—an ancient man-made island—dating back thousands of years. As you run through these woods, you are traversing the same landscapes where the Earls of Ross once held sway. Today, the forest trails around Cnoc Mòr are a haven for local wildlife, and runners can frequently spot red squirrels and soaring birds of prey while enjoying the crisp, pine-scented air of Ross-shire.
