Experience the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands on this 11.3km loop starting from the village of Contin. This route is a true trail runner's delight, trading pavement for the soft, pine-needle-covered tracks of Torrachilty Forest. With 137m of ascent, the terrain earns its "hilly" reputation, offering a moderate challenge that rewards you with technical descents and stunning woodland vistas. Runners will navigate through towering conifers and ancient birch trees, with the Highlight being an optional spur to the thunderous Rogie Falls. The sound of the Black Water river provides a constant, rhythmic backdrop as you weave through the undulating forest paths, making this a perfect mid-distance training run for those looking to build strength on uneven ground.
Contin is steeped in Highland history, serving as a gateway to the wilder northern territories for centuries. The Black Water river, which gives the route its name, has long been a vital artery for the region, famous for its leaping wild Atlantic salmon and the impressive suspension bridge at Rogie Falls. This area is part of a larger network of ancient drove roads once used by Highlanders to move cattle to market. Set against the backdrop of Ben Wyvis, the forest you'll be running through is a haven for local wildlife; keep a keen eye out for red squirrels and pine martens, which are frequently spotted in the dense canopy. Running here offers more than just exercise—it is an immersive journey into the natural heritage of Ross-shire.
