The Farley Wood 12 is a captivating 12.3km loop that offers runners a perfect blend of Highland road and trail. Starting from Croyard Road in Beauly, this SL (Small Loop) course transitions from paved surfaces to rugged forest tracks, making it a versatile choice for those looking to build endurance. With 306m of ascent, the route is moderately hilly, particularly as you climb through the dense treeline of Farley Wood. Runners can expect sweeping views of the surrounding glens once they hit the higher elevations, followed by a rewarding descent back through the charming hamlets of Ruilick and Ruisaurie. The terrain is roughly 45% paved, so it is best to opt for a hybrid shoe to handle both the tarmac sections and the potentially soft woodland floor.
Steeped in local character, Beauly takes its name from the French "Beau Lieu" (beautiful place), a sentiment supposedly shared by Mary Queen of Scots upon her visit. This route takes you past the historical echoes of the Lovat Estates, where the rugged landscape shaped the history of the Clan Fraser of Lovat. As you progress through Farley Wood, you are running through a landscape that has been a working forest and a source of local legend for centuries. The area is a haven for red squirrels and buzzards, providing a wild, natural soundtrack to your session. After finishing your loop, the village of Beauly offers excellent local cafes and the ruins of the 13th-century Beauly Priory, perfect for a post-run architectural stroll.
