This 6.4km out-and-back route offers a pancake-flat running experience through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Scottish Highlands. Starting and finishing at the iconic Banavie Swing Bridge, you'll follow the towpath of the Caledonian Canal along a section of the Great Glen Way. The terrain is unpaved but consists of well-maintained, firm canal-side paths that are perfect for maintaining a steady rhythm. With only 21 meters of total ascent, this is an ideal choice for runners looking for a tempo session or a recovery run without the taxing inclines typically found around Fort William.
Banavie is famous for "Neptune's Staircase," a series of eight locks that lift vessels 64 feet, located just a stone's throw from the start line. As you run alongside this feat of 19th-century engineering designed by Thomas Telford, you’ll be treated to spectacular, unobstructed views of the North Face of Ben Nevis. This area marks a historic artery of the Great Glen, a geological fault line that slices through the Highlands. Whether the peaks are shrouded in mist or glowing in the sun, the local atmosphere here is pure tranquility, far removed from the busier tourist hubs of Fort William town center.
