Escape into the tranquil pine-scented air of the Devilla Forest on this scenic 10.1km loop. Characterized by wide, firm gravel tracks, this route offers a smooth and consistent running surface with very minimal elevation gain, making it an ideal choice for a sustained tempo run or a peaceful long-distance recovery session. While the majority of the path is well-drained, you’ll encounter a charming, softer grassy section as you skirt the perimeter of Peppermill Dam. Keep your eyes peeled and your footsteps light; this forest is a famous sanctuary for the elusive native red squirrel, and you are highly likely to spot them darting through the Scots Pines during the quieter morning hours.
Located just on the outskirts of Kincardine, Devilla Forest is a hidden gem in Fife’s trail running scene, steeped in both natural beauty and local folklore. As you traverse the loop near Peppermill Dam, you are running through a landscape that once powered local industry, with the dam itself originally constructed to supply water to a nearby paper mill in the 19th century. The forest is also home to the "Standard Stone," a historic gathering point said to have been used by the Scots army before the Battle of Inverkeithing. Today, the area serves as a vital green lung for the region, offering runners a perfect blend of Caledonian woodland atmosphere and flat, fast forest trails that are accessible year-round.
