This 6.7km loop in the heart of Fife offers a quintessential Scottish trail running experience, packing a punch with 344m of ascent over short, sharp climbs. Starting from the historic village of Falkland, the route follows a steady climb up East Lomond, where the terrain transitions from woodland paths to open hillside. The summit reward is a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Firth of Forth and the Tay Bridge. The descent is fast and technical, leading you into the enchanting Maspie Den, where you'll navigate lush, winding trails alongside the Maspie Burn, passing under cascading waterfalls and through dense greenery that feels a world away from the peaks above.
Deeply rooted in royal history, the area around Falkland was once the preferred hunting ground for the Stuart monarchs. As you run through the Maspie Den, you are traversing a landscape meticulously designed in the 19th century as a "picturesque" pleasure ground for the Falkland Estate. The village itself, home to the magnificent Falkland Palace, served as the primary residence for Mary Queen of Scots during her country retreats. Keep an eye out for the Yad waterfall along the burn—a favorite spot for local runners to find a cool mist on a humid day—before finishing your session on the cobblestone streets that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.
