Route Overview & Local Insights

This 11.7km loop offers a fantastic blend of paved suburban paths and scenic countryside trails on the south side of Polmont. Starting with a flat, rhythmic warm-up along the historic Union Canal towpath, runners will soon face the route's primary challenge: a steady, rewarding climb through Maddiston up to the village of California. With 114m of ascent, it’s a moderately hilly workout that tests your lungs on the way up but rewards you with a predominantly downhill and flat second half. The mix of 65% paved surfaces and firm trails makes it a versatile choice for those looking to transition from city streets to more rural vistas without needing technical trail shoes.

Maddiston and the surrounding Braes area are steeped in industrial heritage, originally flourishing through quarrying and coal mining. As you run from Brightons toward California—a village supposedly named by miners during the 19th-century gold rush era—you’ll experience the unique transformation of this landscape from a bustling industrial hub to a peaceful green corridor. The route captures the heart of the Falkirk area's natural beauty, providing sweeping views across the Forth Valley on clear days and a sense of quiet isolation despite being just a stone's throw from the Edinburgh-Glasgow commuter belt.
