Route Overview & Local Insights

This 13.4km loop through Falkirk and Bonnybridge offers a remarkably flat and fast experience, perfect for runners looking to maintain a steady tempo without the interruption of steep climbs. Starting in the heart of Falkirk, the route utilizes the well-maintained canal towpaths of the Forth & Clyde Canal and segments of the iconic John Muir Way. The terrain is a reliable mix of paved surfaces and hard-packed paths, providing excellent footing throughout. A standout highlight of this run is passing through the Falkirk Wheel Tunnel; however, keep in mind that this specific section is closed between dusk and dawn, so time your run for daylight hours to enjoy the full circuit.

Beyond the smooth trails, this route immerses you in the rich industrial and agricultural heritage of Central Scotland. You’ll run past the engineering marvel of the Falkirk Wheel, the world's only rotating boat lift, which connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. As you head toward Bonnybridge, you’re tracing paths that follow the historic Antonine Wall, once the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. The area is a hub for local recreational runners, offering a unique blend of modern innovation and ancient history, all while keeping you safely away from heavy traffic on tranquil, waterside arteries.
