Embark on a powerful 32.2km Point-to-Point journey through the heart of Dumfries and Galloway on this scenic segment of the Annandale Way. With an approachable 239m of ascent, this route is characterized by its steady, rolling nature rather than grueling climbs, making it an excellent choice for endurance runners or those training for an ultra. You will traverse a tactical mix of surfaces, with 55% being paved quiet roads and the remainder consisting of well-defined trails and woodland paths. Starting in the charming town of Moffat, you’ll escape into dense, attractive mixed woodland and follow the serene corridor of the River Annan, enjoying a rare sense of solitude where the only traffic you’re likely to encounter is the local wildlife.
Steeped in Border Country history, this route follows a landscape carved by the River Annan as it winds toward the Solway Firth. Moffat itself was once a famous spa town, but its geographical significance is anchored by the nearby Devil’s Beef Tub—a massive natural hollow used in the 16th century by the Border Reivers to hide stolen cattle. This section of the trail captures the transition from the high, dramatic hills of the north to the fertile, rolling valley floor. As you run toward the market town of Lockerbie, you are literally following the flow of history, passing the junctions where the Kinnel, Dryfe, and Moffat waters merge to strengthen the river that has defined this region’s economy and borders for centuries.
