Conquering Whita Hill is a quintessential Scottish hill running experience, packed into a punchy 5.7km loop. Starting from the "Muckle Toon" of Langholm, this Category SL (Short Local) course demands respect with a steady 258m ascent that will test your climbing legs and lung capacity. The terrain is a true hybrid, with nearly half of the route on paved surfaces before transitioning into the rugged, undulating moorland typical of the Southern Uplands. As you scale the grassy slopes, the effort pays off with panoramic views over the Esk Valley, making the 5-point hilliness rating feel like a rewarding challenge rather than a chore.
Langholm holds a deep-rooted connection to its landscape, famous for the annual Common Riding traditions and as the birthplace of poet Hugh MacDiarmid. Whita Hill itself is crowned by the massive 30-meter high Malcolm Monument, an obelisk built in 1835 to honor Sir John Malcolm. Runners will find the spirit of the Border Reivers in these hills, where the weather can change quickly but the grit of the local running community remains constant. After your descent, take a moment to enjoy the peace of the River Esk; it’s the perfect place to cool down after a vertical session in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway.
