Tackling Ben Ever from the Clackmannanshire side offers a quintessential Ochil Hills experience, distilling a high-mountain feel into a punchy 9.8km loop. This "SL" (Short Long) category hill run features a demanding 588m of vertical gain, primarily conquered via a steep, grassy ascent that will test your glutes and determination. Once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views of the Forth Valley and the rolling peaks of the Ochils. The descent is technical and engaging, trading open hillside for the rugged, narrow trails and steps of Tillicoultry Mill Glen before a flat, paved final 5km stretch along the base of the hills allows you to open up your stride and flush out the legs.
The area surrounding Tillicoultry is steeped in industrial heritage, once serving as a thriving hub for the Scotch woollen trade. The "Mill Glen" through which you descend was originally the lifeblood of the town, with the burn's rapid waters powering multiple textile mills during the 18th and 19th centuries. Running this route connects you to this history, moving from the wild, ancient terrain of the high sheep pastures down into the heart of the village's Victorian engineering. It’s a favorite training ground for local harriers who appreciate the transition from pure fell running to the steady, fast rhythm of the valley floor.
