Tackling the "Around Craighorn" loop offers a quintessential Scottish hill running experience just north of Alva. This 11.1km circuit is categorized as a challenging "hilly 5," demanding significant vertical effort with 512m of ascent across rugged, unpaved terrain. Runners will navigate the steep slopes of The Nebit and push toward the high ridges of Craighorn, where the path crests above the 500m mark. The descent provides a technical but rewarding return alongside the atmospheric Glenwinnel Burn, though the mountain environment requires high gear awareness, as exposure to the elements changes rapidly once you leave the shelter of the glen.
The Ochil Hills, which frame this route, have long served as the dramatic backdrop to the industrial weaving history of the Hillfoots villages. While Brook Street in Alva now serves as a quiet jumping-off point for outdoor enthusiasts, the silver mines and wool mills that once defined this area relied on the very water descending from these heights. As you run, look out for the distinctive rounded summits characteristic of this range, which offer some of the most expansive views in Clackmannanshire, stretching across the Forth Valley toward the distant peaks of the Southern Highlands and the Pentlands.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
