This 3.7km loop through Edinburgh’s Southside offers a punchy, technical challenge that belies its shorter distance. With 206m of ascent packed into a Category SL course, you’ll tackle steep gradients and stone steps as you climb toward the iconic summit of Arthur’s Seat. The terrain is entirely paved, making it accessible for road shoes, but the "Hilly 5" rating means your lungs and glutes will feel every meter of the climb. We’ve specifically designated the summit loop as an untimed section, allowing you to catch your breath and soak in the 360-degree views of the Firth of Forth and the Lothians without worrying about your pace on the descent or navigating through the tourists who frequent this popular peak.
Arthur’s Seat is more than just a hill; it’s the remains of a dormant volcano that has dominated the Edinburgh skyline for 350 million years. Running through the Southside and Holyrood Park, you are moving through a landscape steeped in literary and geological history, once the hunting grounds of Scottish kings. The area serves as the "green lung" for the University of Edinburgh students and Southside locals alike. While the trails can get busy with walkers and hikers during peak hours, there is an undeniable energy to sprinting past the Salisbury Crags and descending back toward the vibrant cafes of the Southside, where a post-run coffee is practically a local tradition.
This course includes one or more areas where higher levels of caution are recommended and your time is temporarily paused. We suggest reviewing the map in close up, where these sections are shown with dashed lines.
