If you are looking for a pancake-flat PB or a breezy recovery run, this 5km loop at Silverknowes Promenade is arguably the best spot in Edinburgh. Starting near Gypsy Brae, the route offers a completely paved, 100% flat surface that makes it a favorite for speedwork and local time trials. Runners will enjoy an invigorating experience with wide-open paths and a refreshing coastal breeze, circling the lush greenery of the Gypsy Brae Recreation Ground while maintaining an unobstructed view of the gleaming Firth of Forth.
Steeped in local character, Silverknowes has long been a sanctuary for the North Edinburgh running community. While today it is known for its scenic vistas across to Fife and the historic Cramond Island, the area reflects Edinburgh’s industrial and maritime evolution. The reclaimed parkland at Gypsy Brae provides a striking contrast between the rugged shoreline and the manicured trails, offering a peaceful escape from the city center’s cobblestones. After your loop, many locals recommend heading toward the nearby Cramond village for a post-run coffee by the harbor.
