This 8.7km circular loop offers a fantastic blend of Edinburgh’s coastal charm and suburban greenery, making it a favorite for local runners looking for variety. Starting in Pilton, you’ll head toward the refreshing sea breeze of the Silverknowes Esplanade. The course is entirely paved, providing a fast and reliable surface, though don't let the "flat" coastal sections fool you—there is a subtle ascent of 42m, particularly as you turn back through the lush borders of the Silverknowes Golf Course and climb through Drylaw. It is a moderately challenging route that treats you to expansive views of the Firth of Forth before bringing you back into the heart of the community.
Historically, this area of North Edinburgh has undergone a massive transformation, evolving from the industrial and agricultural roots of the old Muirhouse and Pilton estates into a hub for outdoor recreation. Running along the Esplanade, you are traversing a Victorian-era landmark that has long served as the "seaside" for city dwellers. Local runners know that the stretch past the golf course is the perfect spot to catch a sunset behind the Forth Bridges in the distance. When you reach the finish, you're just a stone's throw from some of the city's most authentic neighborhood hubs, where the community spirit remains as strong as the coastal winds.
