This demanding 21.4km circuit in the southern Highlands offers a pure skyrunning experience for those who thrive on steep ascents and rugged terrain. Starting from the farm at Achallader, runners face a relentless climb toward the dramatic knife-edge ridge of Beinn Achaladair (1038m) before traversing the high ground to Meall Buidhe and crowning the day at the summit of Beinn a'Chreachain (1081m). With over 1,100 meters of vertical gain and zero paved surfaces, this SL-rated course requires nimble footwork and respect for the technical peat hags and rocky outcrops. The descent toward the Water of Tulla provides a welcome, albeit boggy, stretch to stretch the legs after the punishing peaks.
Deep in the heart of the Black Mount and the edge of Rannoch Moor, this area is steeped in both natural beauty and clan history. The route begins near the ruins of Achallader Castle, a 16th-century stronghold of the Fletcher clan that was burned during the Jacobite disturbances. As you navigate the high ridgelines, you are looking out over one of Europe's last true wildernesses—the vast Rannoch Moor—where the sub-arctic plateau creates a microclimate that can shift from sunshine to driving mist in minutes. This is quintessential Scottish hill running: ancient, atmospheric, and unforgivingly beautiful.
