This 5.4km coastal loop from Smithy Croft offers a refreshing mix of paved paths and rugged seaside charm, perfect for runners looking for a low-intensity, scenic session. With only 21m of ascent, the route is predominantly flat, allowing you to settle into a steady rhythm while taking in the North Sea views. You’ll start at Brownlow Place and head out towards the iconic Scurdie Ness, where the terrain is firm underfoot before turning inland through the tranquil Usan Estate. The return leg via Usan Road provides a smooth, paved finish, making it a great choice for a recovery run or a brisk 5k pace-setting effort in the fresh Scottish air.
The centerpiece of this run is Scurdie Ness, a headland steeped in maritime history. The name "Scurdie" is derived from the local word 'Scardy' or 'Skerry,' referring to the volcanic rock formations that line the coast. The lighthouse itself, an impressive 39-meter white tower, has been guiding sailors into Montrose Basin since 1870. As you loop back through the Usan Estate, you are running through a landscape once famous for the "Usan Blue" fishing tradition. Keep an eye out for curious grey seals near the shoreline—they are frequent spectators for runners passing through this peaceful corner of Angus.
