Experience the rugged beauty of the Sidlaw Hills with this 8.0km loop starting from the Balkello Community Woodland car park. This route offers a moderate challenge for trail runners, featuring a significant 306m ascent that will test your climbing legs while rewarding you with sweeping views of the Scottish countryside. While the course is 85% paved or firm track, the hilly terrain and mixed woodland paths provide a true hill-running experience (Categorised as an SL course). Expect a blend of sheltered forest sections and exposed upland stretches where you can really open up your stride against the backdrop of the rolling Perthshire and Angus landscapes.
The Balkello Hills are a beloved local escape near Dunian and Dundee, forming part of the Sidlaw range which boasts a rich history dating back to the Iron Age. As you navigate the woodland tracks, you are running through a community-managed landscape dedicated to biodiversity and local recreation. These hills were once a vantage point for ancient settlers, and on a clear day, the panoramic views extend across the Firth of Tay to the Kingdom of Fife. The area is a haven for local wildlife, so keep an eye out for buzzards soaring above the peaks and deer darting through the younger spruce and larch plantations that line the lower slopes.
