Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience one of the most iconic coastal runs in Scotland with this 7km loop starting from the picturesque Stonehaven harbour. This route offers a challenging yet rewarding mix of terrain, featuring steep cliffside paths and a total ascent of 170m. Runners will navigate a blend of paved sections and rugged coastal trails, passing the dramatic ruins of Dunnottar Castle before pushing out toward Old Hall Bay. The "hilly" rating is well-earned, but the breathtaking North Sea vistas and the exhilarating sea breeze provide the perfect distraction during the tougher climbs before you return via the smoother Coastal Tourist Route road.

Stonehaven is steeped in maritime history, and as you run, you’ll pass through the "Auld Toon," where the smell of fresh catch often lingers near the quay. The crown jewel of this route, Dunnottar Castle, is a medieval fortress perched on a sheer rocky outcrop that famously protected the Scottish Crown Jewels from Cromwell’s army in the 17th century. After completing your run, local runners often gather at the nearby ice cream parlours or warm up with a coffee at the harbour, making this as much a social experience as it is a fitness challenge in the heart of Aberdeenshire.
