This 5.5km loop offers an invigorating blend of coastal drama and manageable elevation, making it a favorite for runners who enjoy diverse terrain. Starting within the St Cyrus National Nature Reserve, you’ll navigate a mix of sandy beach tracks and well-maintained paved paths as you climb the "heughs"—the towering volcanic cliffs that define this coastline. With around 71m of ascent, the climb provides a rewarding cardiovascular challenge without being overwhelming. The return leg through St Cyrus village and Kirkview Crescent softens the intensity, offering a flat, fast finish on solid pavement that is perfect for cooling down or pushing a final interval.
Runners here are treading through one of the most significant botanical sites on the Scottish east coast. The St Cyrus cliffs act as a natural heat trap, creating a microclimate that supports rare wildflowers and butterflies usually found much further south. As you loop back through the village, you'll pass the historic Kirkyard, where the ruins of the original 13th-century church stand tucked against the cliff base. Whether you're chasing a morning PB or soaking in the North Sea views, the transition from the wild, rugged nature reserve to the quiet charm of the village makes this short loop feel like a much grander adventure.
