Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience the rugged beauty of the Aberdeenshire coastline on this 5.6km loop starting from Portsoy’s Cullen Street. This route offers a fantastic mix of terrain, with nearly half of the distance on paved surfaces before transitioning into more technical coastal paths. With a modest 62m of ascent, the "hilliness" is manageable but provides enough elevation to keep your heart rate up as you climb towards Redhythe Point. Runners will enjoy sweeping views of the Moray Firth, keeping an eye out for dolphins and seabirds as the trail snakes along the clifftops toward Sandend before looping back to the historic harbor area.

Portsoy is a village steeped in maritime history, famous for its unique "Portsoy Marble" (actually a green serpentine rock) and its 17th-century harbor, which famously served as a filming location for Peaky Blinders. As you navigate the path near Redhythe Point, you are running through a landscape shaped by centuries of fishing and quarrying. The local microclimate can be unpredictable, so while the coastal breeze is refreshing during a summer sprint, be prepared for bracing North Sea winds that add an authentic Scottish challenge to your training session.
