Route Overview & Local Insights

Tackling the climb up Creag Bheag is a quintessential Cairngorms experience packed into a manageable 4.6km loop. Starting from Tait’s Brae in Kingussie, this route transitions quickly from paved residential lanes to rugged, heather-clad trails. With 222m of vertical gain, it is a punchy, hilly effort that rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views over the Spey Valley and the Monadhliath mountains. The terrain is varied, featuring steep technical ascents and fast, flowing descents that will test both your lung capacity and your footwork on the granite-dusted paths. Given that parts of the trail sit above the 500m contour line, even this shorter distance requires a bit of respect for the Scottish elements.

Kingussie, often called the "Capital of Badenoch," is steeped in Highland history, and Creag Bheag has long served as the town’s natural backdrop. As you run through "The Crags," you are traversing land that has inspired generations of local hill runners and shinty players alike. The area is a haven for local wildlife; keep a sharp eye out for red squirrels in the lower wooded sections and soaring ospreys or buzzards once you break out onto the open hillside. After finishing your loop, you are just a stone's throw from the historic ruins of Ruthven Barracks, making this route a perfect blend of high-intensity trail running and deep-rooted Highland heritage.
