This 7.2km loop around Loch Morlich offers one of the most quintessential running experiences in the Cairngorms. Classified as a hilly yet approachable circuit, the trail features a modest 55m of ascent, keeping it fast and engaging without being overly technical. Expect a varied off-road terrain consisting of well-maintained forest tracks and sandy shoreline paths. As you navigate the loop anti-clockwise from Glenmore, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the snow-capped Northern Corries reflecting in the freshwater loch, framed by the ancient Caledonian pine trees that provide a natural windbreak on breezier Highland days.
Loch Morlich is unique in Scotland for its award-winning sandy beaches, situated at over 300 meters above sea level right in the heart of Glenmore Forest Park. This area was historically a training ground for the Norwegian Independent Company 1 during World War II, who utilized the rugged terrain to prepare for mountain warfare. Today, it serves as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, and local runners often flock here to enjoy the crisp mountain air and the chance to spot native wildlife like red squirrels and ospreys. After finishing your loop, the Glenmore Visitor Centre is the perfect spot for a post-run coffee among the local running community.
