This 7.4km loop through the Abernethy National Nature Reserve offers a quintessential Highland running experience with minimal elevation gain, making it perfect for a fast tempo session or a scenic recovery jog. Navigating through ancient Caledonian pine forests, the terrain is remarkably flat with only 33m of ascent, following well-maintained paths that hug the shores of Loch Mallachie and Loch Garten. Runners can expect a firm, paved surface for most of the way, providing a smooth rhythm as you transition from the tranquil forest canopy onto a section of the historic Speyside Way for a strong finish back to the car park.
Located in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, this area is steeped in natural history and is famously home to the RSPB Loch Garten Nature Centre. As you hit your stride, keep an eye out for the rare Osprey, which have nested here since the 1950s, or the elusive red squirrel darting across the trail. The Caledonian forest surrounding the lochs is a remnant of the vast wilderness that once covered much of Scotland, providing an atmospheric and sheltered backdrop that protects runners from the Highland winds. It is a peaceful, spiritual place to run where the air is noticeably crisper and the scent of pine needles follows you every kilometer.
