Push your limits on this invigorating 5.9km out-and-back trail that takes you from the bustling center of Aviemore into the rugged beauty of the Craigellachie National Nature Reserve. With nearly 300 meters of ascent over a relatively short distance, runners should prepare for a challenging climb on well-maintained but steep paths. The route begins with a comfortable warm-up along the Aviemore Orbital before hitting the vertical heart of the Highlands. As you ascend through ancient birch forests towards the higher ridges, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking, panoramic views of the Cairngorm Mountains and the Strathspey valley. Given the significant elevation gain and sections reaching above 500m, expect a true hill-running experience where the air gets crisper and the terrain demands respect.
Craigellachie is a spectacular example of Scotland’s upland birchwoods, home to diverse wildlife including peregrine falcons and red squirrels. Historically, these hills served as a lookout and a rallying point for the Grant Clan—their war cry was "Stand Fast, Craigellachie!"—which adds a layer of heritage to every grueling step you take. Running here offers a stark contrast between the modern amenities of Aviemore and the wild, ancient spirit of the Cairngorms National Park. After completing your run, you are perfectly positioned back in town to refuel at one of the local bakeries or pubs that have long served as the social hub for hill walkers and mountain runners alike.
