Experience the rugged charm of the Aberdeenshire coastline on this 9.1km loop starting in the picturesque village of Johnshaven. This route offers a fantastic mix of terrain, beginning with an undulating coastal path where the North Sea breeze keeps you cool. As you transition away from the water at the 3.4km mark, the course takes a "hilly" turn, climbing through the rural landscape toward Benholm. With 87 meters of total ascent, runners will find just enough elevation to challenge the lungs while enjoying a mix of paved sections and natural trails. It is an ideal mid-distance run for those looking to balance scenic seaside views with a steady inland climb.
Johnshaven itself is a historic fishing village that peaked during the 18th-century sailcloth industry, and you can still feel that maritime heritage as you navigate the narrow streets near the harbor. As you loop back through Benholm, look out for the historic Kirk, a site of worship since at least the 13th century tucked away in an idyllic wooded den. This area is a hidden gem for local runners, offering a tranquil escape from the busier coastal hubs. After finishing your loop, we highly recommend cooling down with a walk along the harbor where you might spot local creel boats landing their daily catch of lobster and crab.
