This 12.5km circuit offers a quintessential Scottish hill running experience, blending steady climbs with fast, technical descents. Starting from Tarland, you’ll tackle a 493m ascent that takes you through the manicured grounds of Douneside and the rugged slopes of Longfold before reaching the summit of Pressendye. The terrain is a mix of paved sections (35%) and hilly trails that peak above the 500m mark, where the weather can shift from calm to bracing in minutes. The reward for the climb is a sweeping downhill stretch via Pittenderich, offering a quad-burning return to the Howe of Cromar that will test your trail footwork.
Steeped in Aberdeenshire history, the Pressendye ridge serves as a natural balcony overlooking the Cairngorms National Park. As you crest the summit cairn, keep an eye out for the panoramic views of Lochnagar and the distant peaks of the High Grampians. The area around Tarland is famous for its "Macbeth stone" and prehistoric remains, reflecting a landscape that has been traversed for millennia. Running here feels like traveling through time, moving from the refined Victorian elegance of the Douneside estate into the wild, heather-clad moorland that defines the heart of the North East’s upland plateaus.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
