This 6.7km loop offers a quintessential Cairngorms running experience, starting from the high-altitude village of Tomintoul and descending toward the crystal-clear waters of the River Avon. The terrain is a stimulating mix of roughly 40% paved surface and rugged highland tracks, featuring a moderate 110m of ascent that classifies it as a moderately hilly challenge. Running anti-clockwise, you'll tackle moving climbs and sweeping descents as you pass through landmark sites like Tom na Bat and Druim na h-Easgainn. The footing can be varied; expect firm trails underfoot with plenty of fresh Highland air and panoramic views of the surrounding heather-clad moorlands as you navigate the Carn Meadhonach section back to the village.
Tomintoul holds the distinction of being the highest village in the Highlands, originally founded in the 1770s as a planned settlement. As you run this circuit, you are traversing the historic Glenlivet Estate, an area world-renowned for its whisky heritage and deep-rooted smuggling folklore. The River Avon—locally pronounced 'Aan'—is famous for being so deep and clear that it is often said to be "deceptive to the eye," a sentiment immortalized in local Gaelic poetry. This route captures the serene, wild spirit of the Crown Estate, offering runners a glimpse into the traditional landscapes that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.
