This 5.0km scenic loop offers a classic Cairngorms experience, packing a punch with 172m of ascent and a spectacular summit at Creag Choinnich. Starting from Glenshee Road, the route begins on the refined Queen’s Drive—a historical path that leads you gracefully along the river. As the trail turns upward, runners will transition into a more challenging climb through pine-scented forests, eventually reaching an elevation above 500m. The terrain is largely firm but expect a true hilly workout; the reward is a breathtaking panoramic view over the village of Braemar and the deep glens of the surrounding national park before a fast, technical descent back to the start.
Steeped in Highland tradition, Braemar is world-renowned for its Royal Highland Gathering, and this route takes you through the very landscapes that captivated Queen Victoria. Creag Choinnich itself has a legendary reputation in the running community; it was the site of the first recorded hill race in 1064, organized by King Malcolm Canmore to find the fastest messenger in the land. When you tackle these slopes, you are following in the footsteps of ancient athletes. Given the elevation, the weather here can shift from sunshine to mist in minutes, so respect the mountains and bring a light shell even on clear days.
