Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience the perfect blend of Deeside charm and Cairngorms elevation on this 5km loop starting from Ballater Road. This route offers a fantastic mix of terrain, with about 40% paved surfaces transitioning into rugged sections as you climb Court Hill. With 101 meters of ascent, it’s a punchy "short-and-steep" challenge that rewards runners with panoramic views of the surrounding Aberdeenshire peaks. After tackling the incline, you’ll enjoy a fast, sweeping descent back toward Aboyne, eventually joining the flat and friendly Deeside Way for a smooth finish under the canopy of ancient woodlands.

Aboyne serves as a historic gateway to the Highlands, famous for its Highland Games and its role as a hub for Victorian explorers. As you traverse Tarland Way and circle Court Hill, you are running through a landscape steeped in royal heritage and local folklore. Court Hill itself has long been a landmark in the Howe of Cromar, situated just on the edge of the sprawling Cairngorms National Park. The final stretch along the Deeside Way follows the path of the old Great North of Scotland Railway, which once carried Queen Victoria toward her beloved Balmoral Castle—making this a truly regal route for an afternoon dash.
