This 9.8km loop offers a quintessential Aberdeenshire running experience, tracing the gentle curves of the River Dee on almost entirely paved surfaces. Starting from Ballater Bridge, runners will enjoy a relatively flat and fast circuit with just enough undulation (66m total ascent) to keep the legs working. The route transitions beautifully from the open riverside paths near the Bridge of Muick into the sheltered, atmospheric stretches of Dalliefour Wood. Transitioning onto the Deeside Way for the return leg, you’ll find a smooth, rhythmic surface that is perfect for maintaining a steady tempo while soaking in the views of the surrounding Cairngorms peaks.
Ballater is steeped in Victorian charm and serves as the majestic gateway to the Royal Deeside region. Historically, this town rose to prominence as a spa destination in the 18th century, but it is most famous for its close ties to the British Royal Family and the nearby Balmoral Castle. As you run past the old railway station—now a restored visitor centre—you are following in the literal footsteps of royalty who arrived here by train for over a century. The River Dee itself is world-renowned for its salmon fishing, and during the autumn months, you might even spot fish leaping upstream as you cruise along the Riverside Loop back into the heart of the village.
