Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience the rugged beauty of the Cairngorms with this 11.2km circuit starting from the charming village of Ballater. This route offers a moderate challenge for trail enthusiasts, featuring a steady 342m ascent that takes you well above the 500m contour line near Creagan Riabhach. Runners can expect a mix of paved sections and undulating hill paths that circle the base of Craigendarroch and climb toward the Craig of Prony. While the terrain is manageable for those with some hill experience, the high-altitude sections provide stunning panoramic views of the Dee Valley and the surrounding peaks, making the effort well worth it.

Ballater is a historic gateway to the Highlands, famously associated with the Royal Family and the nearby Balmoral Estate. Setting off from the village center, you'll pass Monaltrie Park—a local hub for the annual Highland Games—before moving into the quieter, more exposed slopes of the Cairngorms National Park. The area is steeped in Victorian character, having flourished after Queen Victoria frequently visited the region. Because this route ascends into more remote high ground, runners should respect the Highland climate; even in summer, the weather around Creagan Riabhach can shift rapidly from sunshine to mist, requiring a bit of local wisdom and a windproof layer in your pack.
