The Lairig Ghru is Scotland’s most iconic mountain pass, offering a formidable 42.3km point-to-point journey through the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Starting in the village of Braemar, runners trade paved roads for rugged Highland tracks, traversing the Mar Lodge Estate and passing the hauntingly beautiful Derry Lodge. As you ascend toward the 835m summit, the terrain shifts from ancient Scots Pine forests to a challenging boulder-strewn landscape. With 603m of ascent, the route demands technical footing and endurance, particularly through the high-altitude trench between the massive peaks of Ben Macdui and Braeriach. This is a true mountain experience where the weather can shift in an instant, requiring self-sufficiency and respect for the wild Scottish elements.
Historically, the Lairig Ghru served as a vital drove road, used by highlanders for centuries to move cattle from the Spey Valley to markets in the south. Along the trail, runners will pass local landmarks like the "Tailor's Stone" (Clach nan Taillear), named after a group of tailors who famously perished here while attempting to cross the pass for a bet. As you descend toward the finish in Aviemore, the scenery softens into the enchanting Rothiemurchus Forest, one of the largest remaining tracts of the ancient Caledonian Forest. This route isn't just a physical test; it is a journey through Scotland's geological and cultural history, connecting the Deeside and Strathspey regions via a dramatic glacial breach in the granite plateau.
