Tucked away near the famous Burn o' Vat in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, the Little Ord Trail offers a refreshing 5.4km loop that is surprisingly gentle for this mountainous region. With only 21m of total ascent, this route is virtually flat, making it an ideal choice for a recovery run or for those looking to maintain a consistent tempo away from the technical climbs typical of Aberdeenshire. Runners can expect a mix of well-maintained woodland paths and wider tracks that weave through Scots pines and open clearings. The highlight of the loop is undoubtedly the expansive views over Loch Kinord, where the trail opens up to provide a stunning backdrop of the surrounding Deeside hills.
This area, known as the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve, is steeped in ancient Highland history and natural wonder. As you run, you are circling land that has been inhabited since the Iron Age; the loch itself features a reconstructed Crannog (an ancient loch dwelling) and the nearby "Vat" is a colossal pothole carved out by glacial meltwater over 10,000 years ago. Local runners often favour this spot for its sheltered microclimate, provided by the dense forest canopy, which offers much-needed protection from the biting winds that sweep down the Dee Valley in the winter months. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and deer, which are frequently spotted in the early mornings along the quieter sections of the Little Ord circuit.
