Push your limits on this formidable 10.7km loop that summits Slieve Commedagh, the second-highest peak in the Mourne Mountains. Starting from the Donard car park in Newcastle, you’ll trade sea-level air for a relentless 977m climb. The terrain is classic Northern Irish fell running: rugged, frequently damp, and entirely unpaved. You'll follow the serene Glen River as it carves through the valley, eventually reaching the high-altitude headwaters before the steep ascent to the Commedagh massif. With significant sections above 500m, runners should prepare for technical footing and rapid weather shifts, but the reward is a breathtaking mountain experience that tests both your lungs and your mettle.
Slieve Commedagh, Gaelic for "Mountain of the Watching," holds a legendary place in local folklore and sits as a silent guardian over the coastal town of Newcastle. As you run past the iconic Mourne Wall—a hand-built granite feat of engineering stretching across the peaks—you are traversing a landscape that has inspired writers like C.S. Lewis. This area is the heart of the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the granite peaks were formed millions of years ago. After descending back into Newcastle, local runners recommend heading to the promenade for a well-earned coffee or a dip in the Irish Sea to soothe your aching quads.
