Conquering the Mullaghcarn Mountain Giant involves a steady, rewarding 7.3km out-and-back trek through the rugged heart of the Sperrins. With 343 meters of elevation gain, this is a challenging ascent that tests your mountain running legs on unpaved, hilly terrain. The climb is constant but manageable for those used to off-road trails, leading runners through Gortin Glen Forest Park up to the exposed summit. Once at the peak, you are greeted by the magnificent "The Giant" sculpture, a striking wooden installation that keeps watch over the expansive Fermanagh and Omagh landscape below.
Steeped in local lore and modern art, Mullaghcarn is a place of pilgrimage for the local community. The sculpture itself was installed in 2022 as part of the Giant Spirits trail, connecting the natural beauty of the Tyrone wilderness with Celtic mythology. If you are planning a visit in late summer, be mindful of the tradition known as "Bilberry Sunday" on the last Sunday in July; this annual walk draws large crowds to the summit, making for a festive but busy atmosphere. On quieter days, the silence of the upland heath offers a serene escape, providing panoramic views that stretch across the Sperrin Mountains and beyond on a clear morning.
