Tucked away in the scenic Ards and North Down countryside, this 5.5km loop offers an invigorating mix of woodland trails and steady climbing. Starting from the Whitespots Country Park car park, runners will tackle approximately 96m of vertical gain, making it a "hilly" but rewarding challenge for those looking to build strength away from the pavement. The terrain is entirely unpaved, consisting of natural paths that weave through lush forest canopy and lead you directly to the iconic Helen’s Tower. Expect a variety of underfoot textures including gravel and dirt, which provides a great proprioceptive workout for trail enthusiasts and those training for undulating off-road races.
The centerpiece of this run, Helen's Tower, is a stunning 19th-century famine relief project built by Lord Dufferin in honor of his mother. Standing prominently on the Clandeboye Estate, the tower famously served as the inspiration for the 36th (Ulster) Division’s training base at Thiepval Wood during WWI—an exact replica was later built there as a memorial. As you navigate the loop, you are running through a landscape steeped in literary and military history; the tower even inspired verses by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Whitespots Country Park itself is a unique geological site, formerly home to lead mines, and today serves as a vital green lung for the local community, offering breathtaking views over North Down as you reach the higher elevations of the trail.
