The Slieve Binnian Loop is a quintessential Mourne Mountains experience, packing 531m of vertical gain into a challenging 9.4km circuit. Starting from the Carrick Little car park, runners face a demanding ascent that follows the iconic Mourne Wall directly toward the summit. The terrain is a true mountain mix: expect a combination of paved sections near the start, transitioning into rugged, technical singletrack and periodic boggy patches. Once you crest the ridge, the technicality is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Silent Valley and the surrounding peaks before a fast, stony descent past the serene Blue Lough and back through the valley.
Slieve Binnian, the third-highest peak in Northern Ireland, is famed for its massive granite tors that dominate the skyline like ancient sentinels. Running here connects you to over a century of history; the Mourne Wall itself was constructed between 1904 and 1922 to protect the catchment area of the Silent Valley Reservoir. Local runners know that the weather here is notoriously fickle, often shifting from clear skies to "Mourne Mist" in minutes. Navigating past the "Back's" of Binnian offers a sense of wilderness that is hard to find elsewhere in County Down, making it a favorite training ground for local fell runners preparing for the stiffest mountain competition.
