Tackle the rugged beauty of Northern Ireland on this 5.3km loop around Cave Hill, a quintessential Belfast run that packs a punch with 224m of elevation gain. Starting from the Belfast Castle car park, you'll trade pavement for undulating gravel trails and mountain paths. This "SL" (Short Local) category course is rated a 5 for hilliness, offering a demanding climb that rewards runners with breathtaking panoramic views of the Belfast Lough, the Mourne Mountains, and even the Scottish coast on a crisp, clear day. The terrain is entirely off-road, so expect a technical workout that tests your glutes and your grip as you navigate the heights of "Ben Madigan."
Local runners know Cave Hill as the "Napoleon's Nose" because of its distinctive basalt profile, which famously inspired Jonathan Swift’s sleeping giant in Gulliver’s Travels. As you zip past the Victorian elegance of Belfast Castle or push through the shadows of the ancient McArt’s Fort, you are running through a site steeped in Neolithic and Iron Age history. It is a favorite spot for the local fell running community to train, offering a wild escape just a few miles from the city center. Be sure to look out for the resident kestrels hovering above the limestone cliffs while you catch your breath at the summit.
