Route Overview & Local Insights

Starting from the Salmon Rock Beach Car Park in Portballintrae, this 9.5km loop offers a stunning mix of paved sections and rugged coastal paths. While the terrain is manageable for intermediate runners, you'll tackle approximately 125m of ascent, featuring some "punchy" seaside hills that will certainly test your lungs. The highlight of the run is the exposed cliff-top stretch toward the Giant's Causeway, where the North Atlantic breeze and panoramic views of the basalt columns provide a dramatic backdrop. Expect a firm underfoot feel on the 20% paved sections, but stay focused on the grassier cliff trails where the footing can be uneven following a typical Northern Irish rain shower.

Portballintrae was originally a small fishing village clustered around a horseshoe bay, and as you run, you’ll pass the site of the prehistoric Dunluce Castle just a short distance away. This coastline is steeped in geological history, world-renowned for the 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic fissure eruptions—though local folklore insists they were built by the giant Finn McCool. Running here allows you to experience a UNESCO World Heritage site at a faster pace than the wandering tourists, catching glimpses of the "Giant’s Boot" and the "Wishing Chair" as you navigate the spectacular Causeway Coast Way.
