Embark on a breath-taking 9.8km journey through the "Queen of the Glens." This route is a true trail runner’s delight, characterized by its non-paved, rugged terrain and a challenging 250m ascent that earns its hilly rating. Starting from the Glenariff Forest Park car park, you’ll largely follow the Scenic Trail, which offers sweeping panoramas of the glen and cross-channel views toward Scotland. The path is firm but can be slick under trees, so technical trail shoes are highly recommended. While the climb requires some grit, the descent provides a fast, flowing reward through ancient woodland, with the optional detour to the thunderous Ess-Na-Crub Waterfall offering a perfect moment to pause and reset before the final push.
Glenariff Forest Park is steeped in geological grandeur, featuring steep-sided valleys carved out during the last Ice Age. Historically, this area became one of Northern Ireland’s first major tourist destinations in the early 20th century, with walkways originally constructed by the tea house owners to showcase the sheer scale of the three spectacular waterfalls. Running here feels like stepping into a lush, emerald world; the humidity from the falls supports a rare variety of ferns and mosses that give the forest a prehistoric atmosphere. It is an essential stop along the Causeway Coast for any runner looking to experience the raw, misty beauty of the Antrim Glens away from the coastal crowds.
